On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.
Wolfram Alpha is known as a "Computational Search Engine." It provides users with answers that are computed from externally sourced "curated data", rather than simply providing a list of documents or web pages. Students can enter math problems, discover the popularity and usage of words, or research a historical figure. It is appropriate for students of all grade levels, considering the topics range from basic math, to language/linguistics, art, and Calculus. If you feel overwhelmed, the main page offers a variety of topics to help users get started. It is free to use, but there is a paid version that allows you to save results, see step by step solutions, are share results. The only ads are for users to subscribe to the pro version (paid version previously mentioned).
Educational Uses of Site
Students can use the site to aid in solving mathematical problems. If you are subscribed to the pro version, you can view step by step results and share the results. It can also be used by students to graph equations, if they do not have access to a graphing calculator. Although I have mentioned uses for a mathematics classroom, Wolfram Alpha is not restricted to only mathematics. Other topics that can be discovered on the site include astronomy, art, music, transportation, life sciences, weather, and physics. Teachers of all subjects can utilize Wolfram Alpha in their classroom to allow students to discover information.
Review of Site
I have found Wolfram Alpha to be extremely useful, both in and out of the classroom. I used it in college as a "tutor" that could explain how to solve difficult Calculus problems. I believe students will also find it very useful and intriguing. Wolfram Alpha is a great website that can be used as an educational tool to enhance the classroom. It is easy to use and accessible for students of all ages. If you know how to "Google" something, than you already know how to use Wolfram Alpha. The only downside of Wolfram Alpha is that some key features are only available for Pro subscribers. However, even if you do not subscribe, you will still find Wolfram Alpha to be a fantastic educational resource.
