What is Socrative?
Socrative is an free online tool that allows teachers to assess student learning in live time. Teachers are capable of being creative because they can create different types of assessments, such as multiple choice, short answers, true/false, and a space race (this creates competition among the students) which provides immediate feedback on the students' results. Correct answers can also be given after the students answers an question. However, for short answers if the teacher does provide answers and the students responses are not exact, Socrative will say the answer is wrong; this is basically the only down side to Socrative.
Why is it useful?
I use Socrative often and love it! (I also use Kahoot, which is similar and students enjoy it too). Socrative is extremely useful because educators can assess students and their learning in real time. In addition, the results are sent to you, so the tool eliminates the grading aspect for educators. It also provides visual results in a graph and table form. Overall, Socrative allows educators to receive and view student learning results in a very efficient manner using technology where students are highly engaged.
Informational Background
Socrative is a free online tool that allows teachers to assess student learning as it is occurring. Socrative does not include ads on their site, which is a nice feature because it does not cause frustration by having to exit out of the ads. This tool can be used in schools, which I highly recommend incorporating into all grades. Socrative is a great tool for students of all ages to use because it is easy to navigate and educators can create any type/length of assessments or activities. In addition, Socrative does offer a student section and a teacher section. The teacher section is where the creation of the assessments or activities are done and the student section is where the participation takes place. Teachers can project the results, which will show the students responses if the activity you are conducting calls for that presented information. Furthermore, Socrative does allow for sharing and collaboration because the results are posted in real time and students can work in teams/partners to complete the activities. The results are shared with teachers in three ways: a report through Socrative, downloaded version, or through an email. The results can then be shared with other teachers or students to illustrate learning.
Educational Uses of Site
I have used Socrative in my classroom and have encouraged other teachers to utilize it as well. Personally, I had students read articles and then complete comprehension and critical thinking questions on Socrative. Socrative can also be used for a pre-assessment quiz to establish a baseline for prior knowledge. In addition, Socrative can also be used for exit slips so educators can evaluate if their objectives were met by checking for student understanding. Finally, Socrative can assist educators with differentiated instruction because they are creating assessments that are tailored to their students.
Review of Site
I highly encouraged educators to utilize Socrative in their classrooms because it is very easy to navigate, free to use, and teachers can create assessments/activities and receive immediate feedback, which diminishes grading. Socrative is very useful in all grade levels, especially in a 1:1 environment where students can use their devices to complete the assessments and allows for 100% participation because of the technology aspect. As a class, they can collaborate with learning because the feedback is in live time, so the class and the teacher can immediately assess the level of learning taking place as a class.
