Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Popplet is a site in which students and teachers can great visually appealing graphic organizers pertaining to specific subjects, content, or ideas of their choosing. The site is easy to navigate and allows its users to create colorful and unique graphic organizers, adding as many details to one central idea as is preferred by the creator. This program has a free version in which the user can create up to ten Popplets. It also has two other versions that provide the user with unlimited use and more advanced abilities for a fee. The site does not contain distracting adds. Students and educators have the ability to share their content with each other through the 'share' component on the main screen. I have not found a way to allow others to collaborate with the Popplet using the free version, other than working with a partner in real time. This application is absolutely appropriate for use in schools as it would assist with the planning and creation of resources among all subject areas. There is not a distinct section devoted for teachers and students, but the search feature can help the user sort through the information that they are looking for. This program would be a great asset for students as it is adaptable for all grade levels and can be as simplistic or complex as you would like. Features such as changing text, color, and adding images help to make the product eye-catching, organized, informational, and purposeful.

Educational Uses of Site

This site could be used by both teaches and students. Teachers could use this site for their own planning and organization for lessons, meetings, and instruction. They could also search the site for Popplets that have already been made that may assist them with their planning or research. Students could make use of the search engine on this site as well if they are researching a particular topic. I see my own students using this program to create brainstorming lists on particular topics before completing a writing assignment, or a research project. This will absolutely assist them with organizing their thoughts and information. The site also includes its own blog that both teachers and students could utilize when familiarizing themselves with the program and looking for specific information.
