Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

MindMeister is a brainstorming/idea mapping page. It offers a trial, free, and paid version. It does not contain any ads within the website. It allows for the sharing of content and collaboration. The creator of the page that the users are going to share can either invite other users, or make the site open for editing by anybody who has the link. There is not different sections for teachers and students. It is an open sharing site. It is appropriate for use by students in school.

Educational Uses of Site

MindMeister is a website that is designed to promote collaboration with the use of brainstorming. A teacher can create an assignment such as choosing an environmental scientist and task students with finding a unique fact about that assignment and adding it to a brainstorming map. After the initial idea deadline, the teacher can assign an essay for each student, or groups of students to complete. If you assign groups to write the essay, you can create a map for each group.
The assignment can be a little more rigid as well. For example, you can start a map titled "Hierarchy of Biology." The students can each go in and add one level in the hierarchy of biology. If you have more students than levels in the hierarchy of biology, then simply create more maps.

Review of Site

I think that MindMeister is a valuable tool. At first, I though that it was one-dimensional. But after playing around with it for a while, I began to feel like the simplicity of the site was its biggest asset. You can promote collaboration among students without much hassle. You can just give them access to the link, perhaps via email, and they can go in and contribute their ideas. And it is extremely user-friendly for both the map creators (the teacher) and the users (the students). With some creativity on the teacher's part, it can be a very valuable resource.
