Description of Site:

Geogebra is an online website that allows users to visualize math. It is very similar to Geometer’s Sketchpad, which is application that many school’s used to pay for. It is free and can be downloaded to your computer for use or can be used online. There is also a free app that can be downloaded to your tablet (phone version coming soon). Geogebra is designed for middle school students and up; however, there are some examples of uses at the elementary level. It allows users to visual mathematics. There are advertisements while using the online version. Users are able to share their creations as well, creating a great source of collaboration in mathematics.

Educational Uses of Site

Users can see how Algebra, Geometry, and even Calculus are all connected in a visual manner. It allows users to complete constructions with points, vectors, segments, lines, conic section, and even functions and make changes to them. This allows them to see the effects made by changes (stretches, reflections, dilations, etc). This visualization is great, as they are generally very difficult to explain. Students being able to create, and change, allows them to visualize information that is difficult to draw.
The Geogebra software also allows users to find derivatives, integrals, and roots. Users can search for topics to get great visuals on specific topics, which are shared through the online Geogebra Community. Being able to access this vast array of information would be of great value in a classroom.

Review of Site

One thing that I really like about Geogebra is that it free. Whether using it online or downloading it on your computer or tablet. Another great aspect is that it allows users to visualize mathematical items that that are very hard to otherwise draw or explain. The ability to draw many of these items has always been an achilles heal of mine. I also really like the resources that have been shared by other educators. They are extremely easy to browse and use. The only negative I can think of with this tool is the ability to use it. Though it is not difficult to use, it takes a little getting used to. Once you have figured out how to use it, it isn’t hard. Overall, I would recommend checking out Geoagebra.
