On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.
ClassDojo is a free site used by teachers for classroom management. Each child in your class is given an avatar, and throughout the school day, the students can earn (or lose) points based on their behavior. The site comes with some already created behaviors for positive and negative, but these are easy to edit and teachers can add/remove behaviors to their class. There is also a Class Timeline where the teacher can post pictures of classroom activities and updates for the parents to see.
Educational Uses of Site
Along with a log in for the teacher, each parent/student also gets a log in code so they can connect with the site at home. Students can log in and change their avatars at home. Parents can connect with the teacher and are notified every time their child earns or loses a point during the day. The site also offers messaging for teacher-parent communication. Additional teachers in the school can also connect with the homeroom teacher. For example, if your class goes to music, the music teacher can use their own Dojo account, connect to the homeroom teacher, and also give/take away points while they have the class.
Review of Site
I have been using ClassDojo as my own classroom management system for the last 3 years. I love it and think it is very effective in my classroom. My students earn points for things like "setting a good example" or "teamwork", and they can lose points for behaviors like "talking out of turn" or "bad manners". The parents of my students are also connected and I have gotten great feedback that the parents are so in touch with their child's behavior throughout the day. I also use the Timeline feature and the parents always comment to me about how much they enjoy getting to see what their children are doing in class!
